- Solid color clothing is most appropriate.
- Try to wear long sleeves and/or turtlenecks. It's less distracting and helps create a more pleasant portrait.
- Dark clothing (maroon, black, brown, red, dark blue, green) helps minimize apparent body size.
- For outdoor portraits, couples or family groups should choose simple clothing within the same tonal ranges so that no single member stands out because the clothing is too light, too dark, too bright or too busy (stripes) as compared to the rest of the group or family.
- Avoid large prints of patterns that have wording on them. This distracts from the focal point; the face.
- Finger & toenails -- make sure you have a manicure and pedicure done before your portrait session. Avoid bright colors, instead use natural or basic colors. Otherwise it will draw attention to your finger & toenails and it may look unpleasant in the portrait.
- Plan to wear your hair in a style you're comfortable and familiar with. Wear as you usually do, or try out a new up-do once before the actual session. Avoid new cuts or styles.
- Ladies -- keep your makeup natural and fresh. Make sure to bring along more lipstick and mascara if you'd like to change to a more dramatic look at the end of the session.
- Gentlemen -- a fresh shave and/or hair trim is helpful.
